When Cable television was first introduced in the mid 70′s everyone was astounded by the idea of receiving more than four channels. Realistically, before Cable your choices were only the three major network channels and the local PBS channel, so the idea of receiving at least twenty, if not more, channels was one that boggled the mind. However, 35 years later we are offered hundreds of channels to choose from, both from Cable and Satellite television. So what is the differences that makes choosing satellite over cable so much more preferable; there are actually several valid reasons.

One of the biggest reasons that many people choose to go with satellite as opposed to cable television is because of the reliability; in many areas. Many cable companies are unable to offer a consistent level of reliability, which leaves the customers feeling frustrated and angry, as if they don’t matter to a big company. Many areas tend to be a frustration factor, here are a few that tend to make the deciding factor in going from cable to satellite.

Pricing is usually the biggest issue between the satellite and cable companies. Cable companies tend to offer a great introductory rate for a limited amount of time and then the rates go up substantially, unfortunately the monthly rate tends to vary from month to month. This is usually a big issue because many people budget their bills according to what are supposed to be fixed rates. The satellite companies offer a guaranteed rate for a limited time, but then they guarantee the rate after the introductory time as well.

Service also plays a large part in the decision for satellite service. When there are service issues with cable television getting a technician to come out for service tends to take a great deal of time and is generally frustrating because you are forced to wait all day for a repairman. Satellite can usually fix the issue without having to send a technician, if you should need a technician they schedule as quickly as possible and give you a choice in the time frame for the tech to come to your home.

Continuous service is also top on the list for reasons to choose satellite. With cable when the weather is bad service is also bad; however, with satellite even in the most severe of weather as long as a signal is available you have access, this can be vital in situations such as hurricanes. Satellites help to keep you in touch in an emergency situation. Overall, satellite offers better pricing, better service and also offers access to many more channels than what cable can offer, which is why satellite is a better choice.

1. First, sign up with either Dish Network or Direct TV. And I highly recommend you getting your own subscription instead of borrowing one of your friends, especially if you do alot of traveling and camping. You will need an active satellite account before you can proceed on to the next steps.

2. Next determine where you will be using your satellite most. Whether its home or outside of its main intended location. That way you can purchase the proper equipment for its intended use. Then you need to make sure you have a power source and a portable satellite dish. You can set your dish up in almost any remote place. You just need to be sure your receiver and television has power and also you can get satellite signal.

3. Purchase a portable satellite dish. When purchasing a dish you need to make sure you purchase the dish that is compatible with the satellite company you are signed up with. Also when you buy the portable satellite dish, make sure it has some sort of stand. Stands are not sold with the traditional dish cause they are meant to be placed on buildings or homes. For traveling, I recommend going to a RV store where you can purchase car tops or table top portable dishes. These dishes come with stands and compasses and is easily folded down for easy storage or carrying from one point to another. And next make sure it has coaxial cables to connected to it.

4. We can’t forget about the power. Whether its for traveling purposes in which you need a gas powered generator or an external power source or its your home with ready to use receptacles. If you plan to use the power source beyond the 3 to 4 hours, I recommend getting a gas powered generator or a battery power supply. That way you don’t run down your car battery. And for those of you that decide to use the car battery, you will need an adapter that hooks up to your car battery and provides electrical outlets.

5. Setup at chosen location. You need to make sure your satellite has a clear path between it and the sky. Make sure there aren’t to many trees or buildings that would cause interference with the dish. Place the dish on a table, car or on its mounting station and begin hooking up the coaxial cables. Again make sure it has clear line of path between it and the sky. Once the cables are hooked up, turn it on and go through the setup screen. When you get to the satellite meters, you are ready to start pointing your dish.

When it comes down to satellite television you have basically two choices. Dish Network or Direct TV. Dish Network may not be as well known as Direct TV. But they are making a huge splash in the market with its features such as high quality broadcasting, capable hardware, desirable packages, great rates, and plenty of customization. Their HD DVR is second to none. offering the whole experience and technical features so that they blend in with any home theater setup. And what makes a decent television provider is the content it is able to deliver and Dish Network does that well.

And we you look at them both, they basically offer close to the same channel lineups and packages. So when you compare Direct TV to Dish Network you’ll discover the biggest differences between them are the subscription fees and programming. With Dish Network you can get 256 channels, including movie channels, music channels, pay-per-view movies and events, sports packages, and international programming. Programming packages start at $31.99 per month for 60 channels. Where as its competitor’s program packages start at $41.99.

Dish Network offers free satellite TV equipment free and up to four rooms installation free. The plus here being that you can upgrade and get a DVR receiver or HDTV receiver at no extra cost to you. Where as their competitor charges $49.99 for their DVR and up to $299 for the HDTV receiver. Talk about that one hitting the wallet a good bit.

Customer Service

Both Dish Network and Direct TV have excellent customer service with 24 hour/7 days a week online support and 24/7 telephone support. And here is one more point that makes Dish Network stand above Direct TV and that is customer service. Dish Network’s customer service is ranked number one in the customer satisfaction where as Direct TV is ranked number two. That means that Dish Network is striving hard to make sure their customers are happy no matter the issue and no matter what time of day the issue arises.

The bottom line is this Dish Network is a rapidly growing and expanding company that is taking a big leap at the market and its competitor. Dish Network is more cost efficient and offers more movie packages and foreign programming, while Direct TV offers more sports packages. And cost and customer service as well as the impeccable equipment what makes Dish Network stand out.
